BIRD WATCHING

547 bird species in 74 different families are registered for the entire Yucatan Peninsula, which in turn represents 50% of all the birds reported for Mexico.

Apart from the great diversity of species to be found in the area, the region's fame for endemic species makes a visit to the Yucatan very appealing for the enthusiastic birder ( 4 species of endemic birds). In the state of Yucatan you also view the only colony of American Flamingos in Mexico - numbering more than 40.000 individuals. If you are not already a birder, this is a great opportunity to get started in the amazing world of birds.

BIRDING IN SIAN KA'AN MUYIL

Muyil was a very important trading post for the Mayan civilization and today is possible to visit the ruins; which are in the semi deciduous jungle of the Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve, a beautiful place to go birding. The village (across the street from the entrance to the Biosphere) also known as Muyil is a great place to see many birds and learn about the Mayan culture of today. In this area is possible to observe species such as: Aztec or Olive-throated Parakeet, Black-headed and Gartered Trogon, Lineated, Yucatan and Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Ivory-billed and Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Yucatan, Green and Brown Jay, Squirrel Cuckoo, Cinnamon, Buff-bellied and Canivet´s Emerald Hummingbird and many more.

BIRDING IN THE SIAN KA'AN BIOSPHERE RESERVE

Sian Ka´an, which in Yucatec Mayan language means “born from the sky” is the second biggest Biosphere Reserve in Mexico (1.6 million acres) where an enormous amount of biodiversity protected under the UNESCO program MAB (man and biosphere).

There are 326 identified species of birds in all of the different ecosystems of the Sian ka’an Biosphere. Without a doubt, a very important place for the reproduction and nourishment of many resident, vagrant and migratory birds.
