The area is replete with archeological sites, from the notorious Chichen Itzá to the less familiar yet impressive sites such as Ek Balam. The cultural heritage of this remote corner originates from one of the new world’s greatest ancient civilizations: The Maya, who today, number at least seven million and speak 31 different Mayan dialects.
