"Heaven on Earth"

My boyfriend and I stayed at Zamas just over a year ago -- and it was one of our favourite holidays! Let me tell you why.

We stayed in a bungalow right across the "street" from the beach. Now, by "street", I mean a little pathway, so that in essence, we were right on the beach. This bungalow was amazing! Because they had no other rooms, they put us in a room with two double beds and two balconies, at no extra charge. It was quite difficult to pull myself out of our gorgeous room to make it to the beach, and I'm quite the beach lover. The roof is made of straw, the floor is made of clay, and the beds are made each day with love. I can't recall the name of our porter, but he was very friendly.
The restaurant was also superb. We at there each night and morning, although there are definintely other options around. There was live music every nigh that we were there, and we even ended up dancing one of those nights. The clientele was generally young to mid-age range, and there were a few couples with kids. There was a very funky vibe to it, and at night, the restaurant got to be quite packed. And again, the staff was very friendly! It seemed as though there were quite a few guests who had either been staying for a while, or were repeat visitors. Many people knew the staff by name, and had a cordial relationship with the owners/staff. There was even a foozeball in the "staff" area that they allowed us to play whenever we wanted.
Now, if you've never been to Tulum, I will tell you to not even think twice about it. It truly is a paradise on Earth. The beaches are amazing, and endless. Zamas had it's own section of beach, as do most of the beachfront hotels, but no one really minds if stragglers come in and park on the chairs for a while. There is also a very long stretch of beach that is "unclaimed", so to speak, and is accessible by everyone. It's quite possible to land yourself on a section of beach where you can literally see no other people! The sand is like white powder, and the water is just as lovely.
The town of Tulum is quite funky as well, and also worth checking out. We rode our bikes there one day, but it was about a half hour bike ride. Every other time we took a cab ;) There are a lot of funky shops and good restaurants in town -- I would describe the style of it as a sort of funky-urban-hippy vibe. I bought some great jewelry while I was there!

Just writing about my experience makes me want to go back. It was one of my favourite trips! We spent a couple of nights in the town of Tulum, and a week in Playa before heading to Zamas, but as soon as we arrived, both of us agreed that had we known how awesome Zamas was going to be, we would have stayed there longer and cut everything else out. (of course, Playa is so close you can easily do a day trip) Zamas is an absolutely serene getaway, and the perfect place to go with a lover, or a friend. If I go back to Tulum, I will definitely stay here again.
