Need a place to escape to and feel totally detached from everything else? Playa Azul is the beach hotel to visit. I visited Tulum with two other friends as a spring break getaway and stayed at this charming hotel. After a hellish day of missed connections and bad weather, we got in a cab to make the over hour-long cab drive to Tulum. Even traveling that late at night, we felt very safe. There were several security checkpoints along the highway with armed guards, leaving us with a sense of security. We arrived at Playa Azul at 3:30 am to find the hotel dark and deserted After a little exploring on the beach, hotel security spotted us (very comforting to know that people cannot wander around the hotel grounds without being spotted that late at night) and called the manager who got out of bed from town and came to let us in. The staff was very polite and accommodating. Our room was cozy and beautiful. We had a jungle view room to aid in saving a bit of money, and it was beautiful. The room’s balcony looked out over some of the hotel grounds and to the small two-lane street. The street is very quiet, so not a disturbance at all. The bed was amazingly comfortable, the art went well with the beach's boutique feel, and the hammock on the balcony was a favorite spot to unwind before heading out to dinner. The beach is just steps away from the rooms. Every morning we would go to the freshly combed beach (THE cleanest beach in front of any hotel in Tulum – we know because we walked the entirety of the beach during our stay) and have breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. We tried everything on the breakfast menu during our 4 night stay, and everything was amazing, especially the lobster eggs benedict. The dinner menu was a treat as well. The only thing that I found bothersome at the hotel is that the bathroom did not have a door, making the view of the toilet very prominent, so maybe not the best place to stay for couples or friends who are not yet to the point where they can be comfortable with using it in front of each other. Overall, this was the most relaxing vacation/hotel I have ever been to and I am already planning my return next spring break.

If you are still deciding whether or not to come to Tulum, think about what you vision your vacation to be. If you are wanting a vacation where you can feel like you are escaping from all of the touristy, all-inclusive, big production type hotel spots and instead staying at a small beach town place, then Tulum is for you. It is calm, quiet and gorgeous. If you have decided on Tulum, then seriously look at Playa Azul Tulum. The pictures on the website totally represent what you will get when you arrive. With the gorgeous beach, amazing food, and friendly staff, this is the place to stay.
